With Nebula, Altinbas returns to Observer Station (marking the imprint’s seventh release) to further explore the hypnotic and functional territories of modern techno. The EP stands out for its meticulous sound design, where atmospheric density meets the rhythmic precision required for high-performance mixing.
1. Notus The record opens with a stealthy ingress, introducing a texture that simulates wind gusts and pneumatic hisses of compressed air. It is a masterclass in subtlety, maintaining the elegant, streamlined groove that has become Altinbas’ trademark. This is a highly versatile tool; it possesses a refined low-end that works effectively in any type of set, specifically designed for a dancefloor that appreciates elegance over aggression in the kick drum.
2. Reflection This track operates on spatial repetition. A prolonged delay chain acts as a sonic mirror, where sounds bounce and refract in time with a dub-infused melody that drives the arrangement forward. This progression grants the composition a sense of structure and complexity without overcrowding the mix. Ideally suited for the early hours, it provides a sense of comfort and cerebral introspection while maintaining a steady pulse.
3. Aurora On the B1 cut, Altinbas raises the stakes with a markedly punchier and more dominant transient response. The arrangement mimics a sunrise; elements ascend and brighten with every passing minute, increasing the track’s luminance. Undoubtedly the EP’s standout cut, Aurora is designed for that specific moment on the floor when the crowd closes their eyes and allows themselves to be fully carried away by the rolling groove.
4. Nebula The title track, B2, represents the darkest and densest point of the release. The high frequencies fall like granular droplets within a progression that resembles a cosmic storm. It is a track that inevitably engulfs the listener, balancing an enveloping atmosphere with a penetrating rhythm that feels both expansive and claustrophobic.
Conclusion: Nebula EP is a triumph of functional design. While many techno records sacrifice soul for utility, Altinbas manages to keep the “Club Utility” exceptionally high without losing the artistic narrative. It is a record that travels from the ethereal to the physical, offering the DJ a complete toolkit—from the warm-up introspection of Reflection to the peak-time immersion of Aurora. A strictly essential addition for selectors who value consistency and hypnotic depth.
